What is "Talk Like a Pirate Day"?
Talk Like a Pirate Day is an annual international holiday on September 19th. It was started as a joke by John Baur and Mark Summers in 1995. Now three decades later, people around the world celebrate by speaking in a "pirate accent" (open to interpretation) and sporting pirate-inspired fashion, costumes, and cosplay.
What's the point of the "Talk Like a [Queer] Pirate Day Book Sale"?
To honor the vast and colorful history of queer pirates and to showcase indie authors of queer pirate and pirate-adjacent stories.
Why is this book event on Talk Like a Pirate Day?
I love pirates! I've been enamored with them since I was a child. One of my prized possessions during middle school was this elaborate book about pirates, with all of these little flaps and envelopes and different tactile elements to make learning interactive and fun. I actually still have the book! It's on the "pirate" shelf in my office, along with a dozen other fiction and non-fiction books about pirates. The movie I watched during my first ever sleepover was The Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. After my friend and I finished the movie, we went online and downloaded so many POTC animated screensavers. My first ever published piece of fiction, Color Unknown, features a mermaid-like creature being kidnapped by pirates. My second published novel, The Killing Song, is set in the same world and follows a crew of pirates on a rescue mission.Suffice it to say that I might have a slight obsession with pirates.
Why is [Queer] in brackets?
In writing and specifically in quotes, brackets are most often used to clarify context, fix ambiguity, and correct mistakes. The original name of the holiday does not include the word queer, but queer pirates existed because queerness has always existed in every culture and every time period. I chose to add queer in brackets as a cheeky way of adding "missing" context to make it clear that, for this book event, we are celebrating fictional and historical queer pirates.
Is there a future for the Talk Like a [Queer] Pirate Day Book Sale?
I sure hope so! This is the first ever sale event and itchio bundle I’ve hosted, and if all goes well, I’d love to continue hosting it. I hope interest in pirate stories flourishes in both reader and author spaces, and that next year’s event is even bigger than this year!
